How to use the atlas

Describe first. Treat second.

The atlas starts with evidence a reader can record without damaging the object: material family, finish, application, location, edge shape, movement, color transfer and prior treatment. Select the closest entry only after those fields are written down. A visual resemblance is a route into better questions, not proof that two surfaces share construction or chemistry.

Read every entry across, including the avoid and stop fields. The next step is deliberately conservative because a safe sequence preserves options. A hidden-area test is useful only when the area is intact and representative, the product is intended for that surface and the result is judged fully dry. When those conditions are absent, documentation and qualified inspection are the useful action.

Keep uncertainty visible.

Material can be recorded as confirmed, probable or unknown. Finish and substrate remain separate: an embossed grain may sit on corrected leather, coated split or vinyl. The same scratch on a quiet chair back and a loaded seat bolster also has different structural meaning. Application and movement therefore stay beside appearance throughout the matrix.

The entries do not prescribe universal chemical formulas, certify regulatory compliance or promise invisible repair. They connect a symptom to a treatment family and a stop condition.
